Does Square offer dual pricing? Not as a documented two-price shelf program. Square’s current U.S. help article is about a credit-card surcharge. Dual pricing is two posted prices before the customer pays. A surcharge is one posted price plus a fee on credit. Those are different models, and mixing the labels is how a store fails a mystery shop.

What dual pricing is lives on what is dual pricing. The three rulebooks are on is dual pricing legal. Cash discount versus surcharge versus two prices is on cash discount and dual pricing. This page is only what Square publishes.

The source is Square Support, Set up and manage credit card surcharges, retrieved 2026-09-10. Square can change it. It is not a 50-state statute table.

What Square documents today

Sellers in the U.S. can surcharge credit card transactions. Square calls that feature an open beta. The surcharge is a percentage you configure, applied when the POS detects a credit card.

It is capped at 3% of the sale. Square also tells you the surcharge cannot exceed your cost of acceptance. If you pay less than 3% to process credit, you may not charge 3%. Interchange-plus merchants are told costs move month to month and to review the percentage.

Surcharges apply to credit only. ACH, debit, tips, offline payments, and split tenders cannot carry the surcharge. That matches the debit problem we walk on passing on debit card fees. A Square lane that cannot tell debit from credit still has to obey that split. Square says the feature detects credit cards. Test a debit card anyway.

Surfaces that get the feature: Square Point of Sale, Square Restaurant POS, Square Retail POS, and Square Invoices on the web. Surfaces that do not, as of that article: Square Appointments, Square Kiosk, Connected Terminal, Virtual Terminal, and Square Website checkouts. In-person is the main path. Enabling automatic surcharge also, per Square, temporarily blocks the Exchanges feature.

Square’s own state blocks are product rules

Square says it will not let businesses in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, or Puerto Rico enable the feature. It lists extra setup acknowledgements for California, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas, and notes some states may cap below 3%.

That list is Square’s enforcement on 2026-09-10. It is not a substitute for your attorney general or your merchant agreement. Square also says state laws change and that it updates the blocks as regulations evolve. Do not tattoo this paragraph onto a window sign.

Setup, per the same article, is Square Dashboard, Settings, Account and Settings, Payments, Credit card surcharges. Square generates signage to print for the entrance and the point of sale. Receipts are supposed to notice the surcharge. Reports get a surcharge row on Sales Summary and Payment Methods.

What this is not

It is not dual pricing. Dual pricing needs both prices visible before tender. Square’s article does not describe a cash-price and card-price item file. If you want that model, you still have to post it, and you still have to make the receipt match. Square’s documented tool is a credit surcharge in beta.

Counter Club’s published in-person sample is 2.50% plus $0.10, keyed and online 2.90% plus $0.25. Zero-cost processing, where the cardholder pays 3.95%, is a different program on pricing. Sample pricing applies to new accounts applying directly. Pricing is subject to underwriting, MCC and the merchant agreement; rates may differ and are subject to change. If you are trying to leave Square for a two-price setup, send the current Square settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn on 3% for every card in Square? Not according to that article. Debit, ACH, tips, offline payments, and split tenders are out. Cost of acceptance may also cap you below 3%.

Does this work on a Square Online checkout? Square says website transactions are not supported.

Is Square dual pricing coming later? The help article we retrieved does not promise a two-price program. Read the current article, not a forum thread.

If my state is not on Square’s prohibited list, is a surcharge legal? Square enabling a button is not legal advice. Check state law and the card-brand rules.

Where do I put the sign? Square says entrance and point of sale, using their wording or larger type if you make your own.
